How to share folder between Windows XP and Ubuntu host in Virtualbox

In this post I'm going to share on How to share folder between Windows XP and Ubuntu host in Virtualbox. 

What will this tutorial covered.

1) Configure Virtualbox .
2) Adding shared folder shortcut in Windows XP .
3) Share and edit a file between Ubuntu Host and Windows XP .

STEPS .

1) Configure Virtualbox .

1.1) Create a shared folder in Ubuntu the host system.

1.2)  Open Virtualbox go to  "Settings> Shared folders" . Add the newly created folder in Step 1.1 . Click the blue plus sign to look for the folder .







1.3) Click "Auto-Mount" and "Make Permanent" box.


1.4) Click "OK" .


1.5) RunWindows XP in Virtualbox.

2) Adding shared folder  shortcut in Windows XP .

2.1) Once started, go to "Start> My Computer> My Network Place".

2.2) Click "Add New Network" .


2.3) Add New Network place. Click "Next" in the popped out wizard panel.



2.4)  "Choose another network location" and click "Next" .

2.5) Browse the network and add Ubuntu shared host folder by clicking "Browse" .

2.6) Click "Finish" to close the wizard panel .

3) Share and edit a file between Ubuntu Host and Windows XP 

3.1) Test sharing file between folder . Create a new file . In this example, i create a file name  "Windows_file" .





3.2) Edit the file . and check the file in the host system Ubuntu .By default, the file will be visible between the host system and Windows XP .


3.3) Check in Ubuntu host folder and edit the current file from the host system .





3.3) Check the edited file  in Windows XP folder .

How to install Windows XP Guest Addition in Ubuntu Virtualbox .

 
  
  In this post, I'm going to share on how to install Windows XP Guest Addition in Ubuntu Virtualbox . In order for you to follow with this tutorial, you need to have Windows XP installed  on your virtualbox . If you haven't got this done , please check on my previous post.

STEPS

1) Run Windows XP on Virtualbox. Go to "Device> insert Guest Addition CD Image" .

2)  A Panel will be popped out. Click "Next" to proceed with Installation.

3) Choose the destination folder for the installation. Click "Next"

4) Choose the components that you want to install . I just leave it as default settings.

5) Few Warning windows  will be popped out .These warning windows are asking permision to install video graphic adapter and mouse and pointing devices software. click "Continue Anyway"

6) Once finish installed,Reboot the system.

7) Once rebooted,You should be running on Windows XP Guest Addition .

How to install Windows XP in Ubuntu Virtualbox (step by step for dummies)


  
  In this post, I'm going to share on how to install Windows XP in Ubuntu Virtualbox. If you don't have Virtualbox installed on your system, visit my old post on how to do this .


Setting up Virtualbox

1) Run Virtualbox click "NEW"   and set new operating system details which include Name, Type and Windows Version. You can check Windows CD sleeve for version type .

2) Set the memory size allocation . and click "Next".

3) Create a Virtual hard drive .

4) Store it dynamically on your system.

5) Choose the Hard drive size.



6) Then Click "Create" .


7) Go to  "Settings"> "Storage" and click live CD/DVD. Then set Virtualbox to use host system CD/DVD ROM. 






8) Then "Run"  Windows XP .

 9)Press "Enter" to continue.

10) Accept the agreement by pressing "F8"

11) Choose the unpartitioned disk space that you have configured earlier on Virtualbox.




 12) Format the disk either using NTFS or FAT file format and press "Enter" to proceed . The system will then be formatted and rebooted.

 13) Choose the language and keyboard layout.

 14) Set your name and organization.

 15) Key in the "CD -key" given from the CD case sleeve.

16) Set the "Computer Name" .

 17) Set the time and date.

 18) Choose "Typical settings" and click "Next"

 19) Turn on the Automatic Updates .

 20) Activate Windows




21) Register the system with Microsoft.





22) Set user account profile that can use the computer .




23) Enjoy your newly installed Windows XP. You are suggested to install the Guest Addition version to get more enhance and comprehensive experience.
